Cromwel Rwothomio scored in the 80th minute to give Lugazi FC a 1-0 away win over Entebbe UPPC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo War Memorial, on Wednesday, September 9.
Rwothomio converted Lugazi’s first attempt on target after meeting a well-weighted free-kick from Frank Mulimi, delivered from about 25 metres. The forward beat UPPC goalkeeper Denis Otim to settle a match largely controlled by the hosts.
Entebbe UPPC created the better opportunities in the first half, with Ibrahim Mugulusi and Riche Triomphe Kokola forcing Lugazi goalkeeper Tony Kyamera into saves. Lugazi failed to register a shot on target before the break.
The hosts continued to apply pressure after halftime. Ronald Kayondo came close in the 65th minute, but Kyamera tipped his effort onto the crossbar.
Lugazi gradually improved after Brian Ade was introduced as a second-half substitute, with Juma Ssajjabbi and Rwothomio becoming more influential. Otim later made two important saves after Lugazi took the lead, denying Rwothomio and Dickson Matama.
The result ended Entebbe UPPC’s perfect start to the season. The newcomers had opened with a 1-0 away win against defending champions Vipers SC at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, before beating UPDF FC 2-1 at home.
Lugazi returned to winning ways after losing 3-1 to NEC FC at Lugogo. The Kyagwenians had begun the campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Kigezi Home Boyz in Najjembe.
